Michael Whelan, born 1950 in Culver City, California is a one of the most important contemporary science fiction and fantasy artists, and certainly the most popular. He is a representative of Imaginative Realism and is a winner of (among others) 15 Hugo Awards (SF’s Oscar) andTwelve Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame inducted Whelan in June 2009, the first living artist so honored. via
